SLSA PGR Workshop 2018: PGR Resilience
‘Resilience’ may be defined in a number of ways – ‘bouncing back’, coping (or even thriving) in situations of adversity, overcoming and learning from challenges. So ‘resilience’ sounds ideal for the life of a PGR which, while interesting and rewarding, is not without challenge. But how do you become more ‘resilient’?
This workshop will support participants in examining factors affecting their resilience and the resilience resources available to them. This will include considering individual behaviours and strategies for dealing with times of pressure but – crucially – will not regard resilience as dependent solely upon the individual. Participants will also reflect upon the environmental factors affecting resilience and how they can draw upon external resources. Throughout the workshop, resilience will be approached as both malleable and variable across time and place.
This session will take place 10am -12pm on Tues 27th March 2018, before the welcome lunch. It will be facilitated by guest-convenors, Lydia Bleasedale and Sarah Humphreys (University of Leeds), who are currently undertaking innovative and exciting research into resilience in the context of different professions. For any queries about this session, please contact the session organiser and PGR Rep, Jess Mant (J.L.Mant@Leeds.ac.uk).
PGR-ECR Networking Scheme
In In order to facilitate relationships between early career researchers (ECRs) and Postgraduate Research students (PGRs), there will be ECR volunteers present at each coffee break, ready to pass on their wisdom about the end of the PhD process, the thesis defence, academic publishing, job hunting, their specific research fields, and anything else. PGRs can find their table on the Mezzanine, and they will be wearing name badges with stickers throughout the conference. Further information and contact details of our ECR volunteers can be found in our Networking Scheme document, and any queries about the scheme should be directed to the organiser and PGR Rep, Jess Mant (J.L.Mant@Leeds.ac.uk).
